What We Do

Who picBarrow UK facilitates travelling fellowships
available to UK neurosurgeons and neuroscience
nurses to study at the Barrow.
We aim to create strategic partnerships for the
Barrow with some UK institutions that can
provide mutual benefit in research projects.

Barrow UK is governed under UK law by a Board of Trustees composed of individuals from the UK and the US under the medical guidance of Dr Robert Spetzler, the BNI’s current director. At its inception, Trustees of the Foundation established three academic chairs in support of the neurosciences at the BNI. Newsome Chairs in Neuropsychology, Neurosurgery Research and Neurology are held by the directors of the appropriate departments at the BNI and funds are used to further research and publications in these areas.

The Board also set up travelling fellowships available to UK neurosurgeons to study at the Barrow, and recently we have added similar fellowships for neuroscience nurses.

We are also aiming to create strategic partnerships for the Barrow with some UK institutions that can provide mutual benefit in research projects and the ability for our partners to access Barrow’s brain tissue/tumour tissue bank. We believe that this is an important commitment for Barrow to make: neuroscience research is a global mission, and as the busiest brain hospital in the world, conducting the largest number of brain operations annually, the BNI can lead the way.
